A Director of Payments Engineering role leading the Global Payments Tribe at HelloFresh, responsible for gathering payment details and processing payments for the subscription business serving 8.5+ million active customers. The role leads engineering teams and Staff Engineers across the payments domains and owns payments architecture strategy and long-term vision.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Lead three engineering squads of 20-25 engineers, managing Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers across Warsaw and Berlin
  • ▹Own the GenAI transformation of the Payments Tribe, driving an AI-native roadmap from AI-assisted development to agentic workflows and LLM-powered tooling
  • ▹Own the availability and reliability of payment infrastructure, driving SRE practices, incident management, SLOs/SLIs and on-call maturity
  • ▹Set technical direction across Golang, Kotlin, PostgreSQL, Kafka, React and React Native services on AWS, ensuring regulatory and compliance requirements are met
  • ▹Partner with Product, Finance, the Growth tribe and payment service providers to align engineering priorities with business outcomes
  • ▹Manage, coach and develop Engineering Managers, holding them accountable for team health and delivery

Requirements

  • ▹Proven leadership at scale, with significant software engineering experience leading multiple teams
  • ▹Deep technical expertise relevant to Payments: payment processing, gateway services, batch transaction processing, database systems, distributed computing, backend development
  • ▹Hands-on familiarity with Golang, Kotlin, PostgreSQL, Kafka and AWS
  • ▹AI proficiency and a track record of championing adoption (AI-assisted development, LLM-powered tooling, GenAI-native ways of working)
  • ▹Systems thinking to design scalable, resilient solutions in high-throughput environments where downtime means revenue loss

Nice to have

  • ▹Experience managing engineering organizations across multiple locations
  • ▹Experience with regulatory and compliance requirements in payments
