Principal Software Engineer I, Distributed Systems (Elasticsearch)
Elastic is looking for a Principal Software Engineer I to join the Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team, focusing on how Elasticsearch delivers scale, performance and resilience. The team owns how nodes in an Elasticsearch cluster communicate and how data is indexed, allocated and replicated across nodes. This is a remote-first, globally distributed engineering role.

Responsibilities
- ▹Improve Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines
- ▹Maintain the cluster coordination system to keep performance high as nodes join and leave and data moves, while preserving the system's safety and liveness properties
- ▹Push the limits on the number of shards, nodes and petabytes Elasticsearch can handle
- ▹Investigate a wide range of issues, including performance and concurrency problems, and propose solutions
- ▹Support the support engineers with the harder problems
Requirements
- ▹A strong background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms
- ▹Strong core Java skills, conversant in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs as well as newer language features
- ▹Deep technical proficiency in algorithms
- ▹Proven ability to understand and work on complex, highly distributed systems
- ▹Ability to build and debug features with broad impact running on multiple machines
- ▹Ability to own projects end to end, covering technical design and collaboration with others
- ▹Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers
Nice to have
- ▹Experience with data stores
- ▹Experience with search, analytics and Lucene
- ▹Strong knowledge of the JDK
- ▹Experience with asynchronous event-driven network frameworks such as Netty
