Close has been building a communication-first CRM since 2013 to help teams sell more, faster. It is a bootstrapped, profitable, 120-person, fully remote company. The backend stack is primarily Python Flask web apps with the TaskTiger scheduler for asynchronous task processing; data stores include MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch and Redis, running on AWS (EKS, MSK, RDS, ElastiCache and EC2) with Docker-based CI/CD deploying to Kubernetes, and infrastructure automated with Terraform and Ansible. AI is both how they build and what they ship. When applying, candidates can highlight a preferred team (Agents, Communications, CRM or Growth), and engineers often move between teams over time. This is a US-only, 100% remote role.

Responsibilities

  • ▹Agents team: build Close's agentic platform and customer-facing AI experiences (Voice Agents, Custom Agents, Ask Chloe), the shared intelligence and orchestration layer, and the ecosystem around the APIs and MCP surface that lets external agents like Claude and ChatGPT operate Close
  • ▹Communications team: own the voice, SMS and email infrastructure (Twilio, WebRTC, WebSockets, AssemblyAI, ElevenLabs) and help build voice, messaging and conversational AI agents while scaling real-time AI across calls, email and calendar sync
  • ▹CRM team: build the structured context layer for humans and agents, rebuild the data model, make the CRM agent-ready through MCP and the public API, and ship AI-native features (AI Enrich, Autofill, AI Search) over billions of Mongo documents with Elasticsearch
  • ▹Growth team: run experiments and own the billing infrastructure (Stripe metered billing, AI credit top-ups), the activation and conversion funnel, and agentic onboarding

Requirements

  • ▹A seasoned engineer; Python is the backbone, with experience picking the right tool, possibly across Go, Rust or TypeScript
  • ▹Experience building AI: shipped LLM-backed features for real users with a point of view on where they are trustworthy and how to get them production-ready (using Pydantic, Temporal, LangFuse and similar tooling)
  • ▹Use AI tools in your own day-to-day workflow to ship faster and reason about unfamiliar code
  • ▹A builder-first mindset who ships early iterations rather than over-polishing
  • ▹Opinionated about API design for modern software (apps, agents, humans)
  • ▹Battle-tested: debugged incidents with latency budget issues, owned a system others relied on, or carried a pager for something with real customer impact
