(Senior) Backend Engineer (Golang) - Balance Management
At SumUp, the Global Bank team builds the core infrastructure and services that give merchants a digital bank account. The Balance Management Squad is consolidating and modernizing the European balance management system and building a global transaction history service. As a (Senior) Backend Engineer in the Vilnius team, you will modernize existing systems while balancing innovation with stability and build reliable services for markets with different regulations. The stack includes Go, AWS, Kafka, PostgreSQL and Kubernetes with Prometheus, Grafana and Honeycomb.
Responsibilities
- ▹Build and evolve SumUp's core banking services powering ledger operations and transactions, turning regional systems into a unified, scalable global platform
- ▹Tackle complex distributed systems challenges and ensure resilient services under high transaction volumes
- ▹Support modernization by improving observability, adding test coverage, refactoring code and gradually introducing new architectural patterns without disrupting live banking operations
- ▹Contribute to key architectural decisions and build ledger and transaction history systems from the ground up
- ▹Collaborate with Risk, Treasury, Finance and Infrastructure teams to ensure smooth, compliant and reliable global operations
- ▹Take ownership from design to production, running and monitoring the services you build
Requirements
- ▹Solid backend experience building reliable, high-volume services with careful attention to system design, APIs and data modeling
- ▹Proficiency in Golang and/or Kotlin and comfort learning other languages such as Elixir
- ▹Ability to write maintainable, well-tested code and follow CI/CD best practices
- ▹Comfort building, deploying and running services in cloud environments like AWS using Docker and Kubernetes
- ▹Eagerness to learn about relational databases that perform well under load and maintain data consistency
- ▹A collaborative approach to working across regions with clear communication
- ▹Curiosity for building reliable financial services and the banking domain
Nice to have
- ▹Knowledge of Elixir, in which some legacy services are written
- ▹Deeper PostgreSQL experience such as performance tuning, complex queries or schema design
- ▹Experience with event streaming platforms (Kafka preferred) and modern observability stacks (Grafana, Honeycomb, etc.)
