Senior Engineer I-II | Core Workflow Engine | Remote | Europe
n8n is hiring a Senior Engineer to build and evolve the core platform foundations that power its workflow engine and frontend platform, enabling product engineers and the open-source community to ship confidently across cloud and self-hosted deployments. You contribute to core platform domains and help improve reliability, scalability, and performance, with either a backend or a frontend focus.
Responsibilities
- ▹Contribute to backend subsystems such as durable workflow execution and state, orchestration patterns, queue/task distribution, and system modularization
- ▹Apply best practices for correctness and resilience (failure modes, idempotency, state handling) across cloud and self-hosted environments
- ▹Improve data architecture and database performance, reliability, and maintainability
- ▹Work on core canvas architecture and frontend platform primitives for complex workflow building experiences
- ▹Build and improve real-time collaboration capabilities (WebSockets, CRDT-style approaches)
- ▹Contribute to performance and rendering improvements (web workers, rendering optimization) and strengthen platform contracts
- ▹Contribute to technical decisions through clear proposals (RFCs) and support peers via code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing
Requirements
- ▹A systems thinking mindset focused on correctness, trade-offs, and reliability in foundational platform problems
- ▹System design experience, having contributed to significant components and able to explain technical choices clearly
- ▹Strong TypeScript experience and comfort in a large, evolving codebase
- ▹Good collaboration and cross-functional communication skills
- ▹Pragmatic engineering: comfortable improving and refactoring existing systems
- ▹Backend focus: Node.js backend systems beyond CRUD, distributed systems (event-driven patterns, idempotency), and data architecture
- ▹Frontend focus: complex frontend systems (canvas, real-time, collaborative), rendering performance expertise, and modern TypeScript (Vue preferred but not required)
Nice to have
- ▹Experience with workflow engines, orchestration platforms, developer tools, or infrastructure-adjacent SaaS
- ▹Open-source experience and understanding of public API contracts and backward compatibility
- ▹Exposure to large-scale SaaS systems and monolith-to-modular migrations
- ▹Familiarity with durable execution patterns (queues, retries, sagas)
- ▹Frontend: experience with collaborative/real-time apps, plugin systems, micro-frontends, or web workers
- ▹Multi-deployment awareness (cloud and self-hosted) and an observability mindset
