Senior Backend Engineer (Payments)
Proton is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer for its Payments team, which enables revenue generation across the entire Proton ecosystem, from introducing new payment methods to architecting client libraries. The stack relies heavily on external payment, tax and currency providers, so resilience is critical; the backend is generally PHP/Symfony, with React on the frontend, Kotlin and Swift on mobile, a growing shared Rust codebase and an infrastructure migrating to Kubernetes, all running on premise in Proton's data centers. The team seeks a strong generalist who thrives with ambiguity.
Responsibilities
- ▹Build features across all of Proton's products
- ▹Interact closely with product teams and engineers across the company
- ▹Build scalable software architecture through software engineering best practices
- ▹Optimise user experience and design
Requirements
- ▹Proven experience with back-end development
- ▹Expertise in building scalable, high-performance solutions
- ▹Proficiency with profiling techniques and performance optimization tools
- ▹Experience leading a team initiative from discovery to production
- ▹Strong understanding of SQL (MySQL preferred) and data modeling best practices
- ▹Familiarity with Redis or other caching technologies
- ▹Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing secure software solutions
- ▹In-depth understanding of HTTP/REST, including developing and consuming web-based APIs
- ▹Solid grasp of cryptographic concepts, including key exchange and symmetric vs. asymmetric encryption
